Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese multinational company, among the top hundred in the world by turnover, which produces fixed and mobile technical infrastructure, high-tech electronic devices, consumer products and, together with Westinghouse Electric Company, nuclear reactors.

The Tokyo-based company was founded in 1875 by Tanaka Hisashige, as Tanaka Engineering Works Co., Ltd. The current name of the company was obtained after the merger with another Japanese company, Tokyo Shibaura Electric K.K. in 1939, and made official only in 1978 in Toshiba (contraction of Tokyo-Shibaura).

In the first years of activity, Toshiba mainly produced electric machines. In the thirties it started the production of electronic components, and in the following decades, it specialized in consumer electronics, a sector that allowed it in the seventies, to increase its development and expand internationally.

It is currently listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, as well as on the Osaka, Nagoya and London Stock Exchanges; It has 199,000 employees and a capital of 439,901 million (US$4,888 million).

It has about 300 branches worldwide, of which 24 in Europe, while the industrial production of the Toshiba takes place in 25 plants in Japan, and another 42 scattered around the world (in particular China, Indonesia, United States and Thailand), of which 4 in Europe.
