Optical readers/barcode scanners.
Barcode readers can be grippable (handheld), wearable (rings or wristbands), desk/POS, or industrial for automatic lines in production.
The data connection can be via cable (typically USB) or wireless, both Bluetooth and with proprietary radio protocol where the frequency of 433 Mhz is mainly used.
The scanning technologies used can be laser or imager (CMOS sensor) linear (1D) or two-dimensional (2D), with the possibility for the latter to also read 2D symbologies such as, for example, the QR-Code or Datamatrix.

Wired readers
Optical readers with barcode cable.
Cable reader connection is the most cost-effective and most widely used technology in the most common barcode applications.
The USB connection is now the de facto standard, while in the past the "wedge" connection (in keyboard emulation) was mainly used with special "T" cables to connect to personal computers or IBM or Linux terminals, or other hosts.
Most barcode readers still support wedge connections through the use of appropriate cables, to be purchased separately.
Even the RS-232 serial connection, which was widespread in the past, is now scarcely used.
Cordless players
Cordless optical readers for barcodes.
The wireless connection can be standard Bluetooth or with proprietary radio protocol, in which case the frequency of 433 Mhz is mainly used.
Most cordless players are equipped with a cradle (base) also used for charging for the battery, and connected with USB cable to the host.
Bluetooth readers can be connected directly to the computer if it is equipped with a Bluetooth radio, otherwise they communicate with the base station via Bluetooth and transmit the collected data via USB.

Industrial scanners are fixed devices with laser reading head or imager for reading barcodes on automatic lines, in industrial machinery, totems. They are equipped with various interfaces to connect to industrial devices such as PLC, photocells and sensors of various types.
